Concerned citizen seeks relocation of Boko Haram prisoners from Anambra community

Concerned citizen seeks relocation of Boko Haram prisoners from Anambra community
Chief Marcel Ezenwonye, a citizen of Ekwulobia in Anambra, has appealed to the Federal Government to move the 47 Boko Haram prisoners recently transferred to Ekwulobia Prisons from the community.
Ezenwonye told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday that the appeal became necessary because the prisoners constituted "high security risk" for the community.
He explained that the presence of the prisoners in the community could attract other terrorists to the area, a situation, which he said, could jeopardise the safety of the people.
"We do not want Boko Haram there (Ekwulobia) because there is imminent danger; their mates outside would want to come and retaliate or would want to come and break the jail and get them out.
"And that is how there will be war in a society that is relatively peaceful, no armed robbery; with the help of the present governor, even the problem of kidnapping has been completely wiped out.
"So, this is the only time the Ibos, especially the Ibos from that town are enjoying relative peace. Those of us from the Diaspora, who return to begin to do something in that town are frightened back now with this current thing (relocation of Boko Haram prisoners).
Ezenwonye said the presence of the prisoners in the community had already created fear among the people to the extent that they no more engaged in social and economic activities.
According to him, this has made some of the residents of the town to flee.
"I can tell you that in the last three weeks now, there has been economic shut down in the place; no market place; nobody is going to the market. The women, who are selling pure water, groundnut, akara balls - are not going to market.
"There are afraid of everybody. There is presence of army molesting people in the area. Suddenly in a village where people have lived their relaxed lives with little or no serious economic activities going on, except the ones we are trying to introduce and build, they are now being frightened into their homes."
He, however, said that the community would not resort to violence, but would continue to appeal to the government to move the prisoners to another location

Abia driver arrested for alleged rape of female passenger

Sexual Assault
A 36 -year-old taxi driver, John Madu, is now cooling off his heels behind bars in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, for allegedly raping a female passenger.
According to the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ezekiel Onyeke, the 24-year-old female passenger, who was said to be travelling from Lagos to Obehie, was reported to be the only passenger in the taxi when the incident occurred.
He said the victim had boarded the commercial car in Aba after she arrived from Lagos and was traveling to Obehie, a suburb of Aba, when the randy driver decided to sexually assault her.
According to the police spokesman, the driver midway into the journey feigned that his cab had run out of fuel and stopped at a lonely place on the Aba-Port Harcourt Expressway, where he raped the suspect.
Police said the pleas by the victim for the suspect not to defile her as she was a virgin, fell on the driver’s deaf ears as he allegedly overpowered her and raped her right inside the cab.
He also said help could not come the way of the victim on time as the incident occurred very late in the night.
Onyeke added, “At  a spot along the road, the driver pulled off the road, claiming that he  ran out of fuel. The victim, who was not comfortable with the claims of the suspect, left the vehicle on the excuse that she wanted  to ease herself.

“The driver, who suspected rightly that the victim wanted to escape, went after her and forcefully dragged the helpless victim back to the vehicle and raped her despite pleas from the victim that she be spared as she has vowed to keep her virginity till marriage.
“The suspect, who fell asleep after the act and did not know when the victim left the vehicle, was woken up by men of the Operation Safer Highway team on patrol of Obehie, who wanted to know what he was doing alone in the vehicle and on the deserted road at that hour of the night and he told the Police officers that he ran out of fuel.”
The PPRO  said luck ran out on the suspect when the victim, who was hiding in a nearby bush, quickly came out and narrated her ordeal to the police patrol team.
“The suspect was promptly arrested and handed over to the Police at Obehie,” he said.
He said the victim was later  taken to Cottage Hospital, Owaza, for medical attention while the suspect, “who made useful statement to the Police,” would soon be arraigned.

The state Commandant, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Malam Muhammad Gudado, told the News Agency of Nigeria  on Monday in Dutse, that the incident occurred around 12:23pm on Sunday, when the cylinder exploded in the market on a market day.
“Welding gas exploded in Ruba Village market, Kafinhausa Local Government, yesterday around 12:30pm, killing seven people and injuring two,” Gidado said.
He explained that the two legs of the welder were seriously damaged by the explosion.
The Commandant said investigation was still ongoing to ascertain the cause of the explosion.

He said those injured had been taken to hospital for medical attention by his men operating in the area.
Gidado therefore advised people to be extra careful while using fire.

Pilgrims bitten by snakes at Paraguay papal Mass

At least 14 people have been bitten by snakes and had to be attended by medics during a Mass conducted by Pope Francis in the Paraguayan city of Asuncion, Al Jazeera has learnt.
The snakebites occurred despite authorities fumigating the muddy grounds of an air force base to protect more than one million pilgrims who attended Sunday’s Mass.
Al Jazeera’s Lucia Newman, reporting from the venue, said while no one died, the incidents highlighted the difficulties many of the pilgrims had to go through to attend the service.
“They came from all over Paraguay and tens of thousands from neighbouring Argentina, the pope’s home country, too,” she said.
“They were also at risk of getting dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases, which are especially common during the rainy season.”
Our correspondent said many people had spent the previous night at the venue to try to secure a good position to see Francis, who is from Argentina and the first Latin American to head the Roman Catholic Church.
“The pope’s personal appeal, especially here in his home continent, is undeniable,” our correspondent said.

“With every leg of his trip, Pope Francis added a new layer to his social gospel, to his defence of the poor, criticism of political intolerance and of a world economic order that he says creates widespread inequality .
“Here in Paraguay, where at least a million people turned out for his final Mass, the recurring theme was corruption, which he called the gangrene of society.”
Francis also asked for the forgiveness of his church “from those who don’t think the way we do”.
The pope on Sunday wrapped up his week-long tour to three of the poorest and smallest countries in South America; Ecuador, Bolivia and Paraguay.

UN to build 500 houses for Adamawa IDPs

The United Nation’s High Commission for refugees in Africa on Sunday said arrangements had been concluded to construct 500 housing units for the aged, physically challenged, orphans and the very sick persons who were displaced by Boko Haram insurgents in Adamawa State.
The leader of the High Commissioner for Refugees, Mr. Cesar Tshilombo, dropped the hint while briefing the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Martins Babale, on the modality adopted by the body to share the houses after completion.
According to him, the United Nation High Commission for Refugees could not shoulder responsibilities to build all destroyed houses by Boko Haram insurgents alone. This, he said, was why the UN agency resorted to foot the bill of just 500 houses.
Tshilombo, however, declared that each bungalow would cost about $2,000.
Earlier, the Deputy Governor, who received the delegation, had said that the sharing of the houses would not be politicised because stakeholders of all the communities affected would be involved in the process.
Babale, therefore, proposed that IDPs’ camps should be built outside the state capital and then suggested that such camps should be built at Toungo Local Government in South senatorial district of the state

Meanwhile, the member representing Hawul and Askira-Uba in the House of Representatives, Jubrin Satumari, on Sunday said many towns and villages in the North-East are still susceptible to the attack of the Boko Haram insurgents.
He lamented that the military presence was highly concentrated in major towns with little protection for distant and remote communities in the troubled region.
The lawmaker, who condemned the growing renewed attacks of the dreaded sect, said the military needed to do more to confront the insurgents.
He said it was unfortunate that in many remote communities in Askira-Uba and Hawul federal constituency, as well as other areas “people have sleepless night as they do not have the luxury of the military presence in their area.”

NDLEA sets to probe Davido over video

Davido
Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency has set up a panel to investigate a music video released by Nigerian artiste, Davido, in which he displayed a substance suspected to be hard drugs.
The video of his track entitled, ‘Fans mi’, in which he featured an American rapper and member of the Maybach Group, Meek Mill, showed Davido with a briefcase filled with dollars and another bag filled with parcels of a substance suspected to be hard drugs.
The Director of Public Affairs of the NDLEA, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, told SUNDAY PUNCH on Saturday that the investigative panel might invite the hip-hop artiste for questioning if the need arose.
He said, “I am aware that a panel is working on it (the video). The panel was set up soon after the video was released few weeks ago.
“When our attention was drawn to it, we viewed it and we discovered that it was improper. There is no moral lesson in it and he was just advertising drug trafficking.
“In the video, he exchanged a brief case supposedly containing narcotics for dollars. He was displaying affluence in the video. If it (the plot) had climaxed in an arrest and possible detention, we would have congratulated him for partnering with us. But the way he portrayed drug trafficking in the video was a means to an end, which the end is a life of affluence which we disagree with.”
Ofoyeju said the anti-drug agency would conduct a full-scale investigation into the making of the video and to confirm whether it was censored before its release.
The NDLEA spokesperson further said, “We are looking at the issue holistically. We believe that there should be a body that was supposed to censor videos before they go out. Those are the things we want to investigate and verify. Was the video submitted for approval? If it was submitted, why was it approved, with such content?”
NDLEA had in June 2013 said controversial Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risked a minimum of 15 years in jail for encouraging the consumption of hemp.
Dikeh had on June 28, 2013, posted photographs of a wrap of hemp and grains of the weed formed into the letters, ‘Happy birthday POKO.’
She also posted a photograph of herself and added the inscription, ‘Mi smoke ganja mi smoke weed while my hatez smoke ma gossip.’
Her picture is a close-up of her face that seemed to depict her in a high state.
As a result, the agency said it was keeping tabs on more celebrities in Nollywood and the music industry for drug trafficking, abuse and links with drug cartels.

Mother Stabs Daughter, Bites Off Her Ear After Catching Her Having s*x With Lover

Sad-Woman-400x600
Alleged polyandrous housewife identified as Chiekube Igbinosa in Akumazi community, Ika North East local government area of Delta State, at the weekend allegedly bit off the daughter’s ear and stabbed her with broken bottles over rivalry over her boyfriend.
In what looks like a ferry tale, the case of the seed of discord between the housewife and the daughter over boyfriend, it was reliably gathered, was borne out of evil intensions, especially with the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Sources said the fight which allegedly led the mother biting off a scoopful of flesh from the daughter’s ear, including hot damaging slaps, took place around camp 74 behind Ibori Golf course within the Asaba campus of the Delta State University.
The 46-year-old woman said to have been the first love of an Ibo building materials’ trader who was said to have been deported to Nigeria three years ago from Spain, allegedly hoodwinked the woman’s daughter into relationship.
The in question had recently graduated from a university in the South-south region and is on her visit to the mother after her Youth Service in Rivers State.
While their love relationship blossoms, the unsuspecting mother and secondary school vice principal, allegedly showers the lover boy with gifts, including part of her monthly salaries.
But this was not to be when the daughter identified as Mabel Igbinosa flippantly opened up to her friend her relationship with the Igbo man building materials trader, including how he made love to her in marathon exercise.
This, our informed sources said, placed the mother on red alert including watchful eye after the friend secretly let out the discussion to her.
Expectedly, the woman had gone to the Igbo man’s house wearing unsuspecting appearance around Okwe Quarters, Asaba when she was sent to Mile 5 not too far from the man’s residence to buy fish while the daughter who sighted the mother run into a neighbour’s room to hide on the fateful Saturday.
Upon her return from Mile 5, she was sent for another errand by her boyfriend (name withheld) faraway from the house; a situation she smelt a rat of something fishing and under pretence of the errand, hide around the neighbourhood and after a few minutes, the daughter sneaked into the man’s room where the bubble burst.
Sources said that the blowsy–looking woman, who is also into provision store business, stormed a nearby neighbour’s room where she laid siege waiting for her daughter to come out.
Hell was let loose after what was described to be marathon s*x exercise, the girl sauntered out of the room, unknown to her that the mother was around.
She was said to have pounced on her and allegedly bit off her ear before stabbing her with broken bottles.
During the fight, police were invited to the scene where they whisked away the woman, daughter and the lover boy to a police station.
But the police public Relations officer the state, DSP Celestina Kalu who confirmed the arrest of the woman and others, said investigation was ongoing in the matter, adding that the daughter had been taken to the hospital for treatment.
