Shocking: 17 dead in Bangladesh stampede (see photos)

At least 17 people have been killed in a stampede during a handout of free clothes at a factory in the northern Bangladeshi city of Mymensingh, police said.
The stampede erupted on Friday when hundreds of people tried to force their way into the factory compound through a small gate after massing outside the building before dawn, local police chiefs told the AFP news agency.
“We have so far recovered 17 bodies. Most of the dead are poor and emaciated women,” Mymensingh police chief Moinul Haque said.

Kamrul Islam, the senior officer at a police station near the factory, said the death toll could rise.
“Some people had taken the bodies of their relatives before police arrived at the scene,” he said.
The owner of the factory and six others have been arrested, Islam added.
Police said up to 1,500 people had massed outside the chewing tobacco factory at around 4:45am after the plant owners had announced they would distribute free clothes to poor people in accordance with Islamic ritual.
Rich Bangladeshis often distribute free clothes to poor people during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan

Synagogue rejects coroner’s verdict on collapsed building

Synagogue Church
The Synagogue Church of All Nations has described as unreasonable the verdict of a Lagos coroner, Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, who called for its prosecution over the death of 116 persons in a collapsed six-storey building on its premises.
The September 12, 2014 tragic incident claimed the lives of 85 South Africans, 22 Nigerians, two Beninoise, one Togolese and six unidentified persons.
Komolafe, a magistrate given the mandate to unravel what led to the victims’ death, had in a verdict on Wednesday indicted SCOAN and the structural engineers that built the collapsed structure and called for their criminal prosecution.
The coroner had held the engineers, Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun, of HardRock Construction Company Limited, liable for “criminal negligence.”
He also recommended SCOAN for prosecution for embarking on a building construction without obtaining the “necessary permits.”
But in a statement on Thursday by its counsel, Mr. Olalekan Ojo, the church said it vehemently disagreed with Komolafe’s verdict that structural defect was responsible for the collapse of the six-storey building.
Ojo, who described Komolafe’s verdict as “unreasonable, one-sided and biased,” said the church maintained its stance that the building was sabotaged.
He described as unwarranted the call made by the coroner on the state to investigate and prosecute the church, saying that before the building collapsed, the process for its approval was in place while the amount payable for the permit had already been processed by the relevant government agencies.
According to the lawyer, the verdict of the coroner could not stand as long as he did not establish that the church hired unqualified or incompetent professionals to do the job or that substandard materials were used.
He also said there was no finding that connected the incident with the lack of a building permit.
The statement read partly, “The church disagrees most vehemently with the finding that the incident was due to structural failure.
“The church considers it strange that the coroner did not refer its verdict to the evidence of the COREN-registered structural engineer and contractor used by the church nor did it evaluate the conflicting evidence given by civil and structural engineers as to whether or not the incident was as a result of structural failure.
“It was a one-sided verdict which left many issues unaddressed and questions unanswered.
“The church disagrees with the findings concerning the aircraft that hovered over the six-storey building because there was evidence before the court that the incident could have been brought about by external forces such as controlled demolition or an explosion.
“The verdict did not even refer to the CCTV footage which showed the six-storey building falling in less than four seconds – a manner consistent with controlled or externally induced demolition – nor did it refer to the interim report and investigation by the Nigeria Police Force which pointed to sabotage by external forces.
“The recommendation for the investigation and prosecution of the contractors and structural engineers used by the church for criminal negligence is premature because it gives the impression that the coroner has found them guilty when a coroner is not allowed in law to make any finding of civil or criminal liability against anybody.”
Ojo said no matter “how long a lie is sustained, the truth will someday prevail.”
Meanwhile, the structural engineer, Fatiregun, has said he would challenge the coroner’s recommendation in court.
Fatiregun, who insisted that his company employed international best practices in the construction of the collapsed building, said, “We will definitely challenge the outcome of this coroner’s inquest.”

How Boko Haram paid four children N2,500 to carry out bomb attack

 Boko Haram militants.
Four children on Thursday, July 9, bombed the Kofare area of Yola, close to a mechanic workshop along Numan Road, Yola, the capital of Adamawa State after being given N2, 500 by a suspected Boko Haram agent.
The Adamawa Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps,  Luka Ikpi, told journalists that the magnitude of the explosion extended to the state headquarters of the FRSC in the state.
The children told the police that an unknown man gave them N2, 500 to carry out the attack.
They said the unknown man instructed them to drop the explosive at a specific place in Bachure suburb, near the Army Barracks mainly inhabited by retired military personnel.
Two of the boys, who are between nine and 15 years, were arrested by the police.
They recounted that the bag containing the explosive was too heavy for them to carry, so they had to sell it to a dustbin scavenger, whom they ran into at the nearby mechanic workshop.
The scavenger, who is said to be helping the police with investigation on the incident, said while he were negotiating with the boys, he noticed smoke coming out the container and before he could inquire about its content, it exploded, shattering his legs and injuring two of the children.
While two of the boys fled, the other injured two were arrested by the police.

Man kills girlfriend, sets her and her son on fire

Fragos-Ramirez is standing trial for the alleged murder of his girlfriend and her son in Washington State. The family suspects the motive behind the killing is jealousy.

Maria G. Cruiz-Calvillo, 18, and Luis F. Lopez-Cruz, 3, were identified on Monday July 6th as the bodies found last week inside a vehicle that was set on fire in a ravine near the intersection of Scootney and Ridge roads. Luis likely was still alive when the car went up in flames, according to Franklin County coroner. Luis would have turned four years old on Thursday 9th of July.

Ramirez was arrested hours into the investigation at his home less than a mile from where the bodies were found. Prosecutors say Ramirez was deported in 2014 and got back into the country illegally.

Family members had never met Fragos-Ramirez, though Cruiz-Calvillo talked to her mother about a guy she was seeing, whom she apparently referred to by the nickname “Loco,” Rodriguez said.
“(The family) thinks she never wanted a serious relationship with him,” Rodriguez said. “It’s jealousy.”

Family members last saw Cruiz-Calvillo the afternoon of her death as she was leaving Othello with Luis for Pasco to make a car payment, court documents said. She routinely went to Pasco to make car payments.

“We checked with the bank,” Rodriguez said. “She made the payment at 3:43 (p.m.).”
2 neighbors saw Cruiz-Calvillo and Luis arrive at Fragos-Ramirez’s home about 4:40 p.m., court documents said. The neighbors recognized the mother and son because they frequent the house on Hogback Road.

Between 10 and 20 minutes later, the neighbors saw the pair and Fragos-Ramirez walking towards Cruiz-Calvillo’s car, court documents said. They didn’t see Fragos-Ramirez return to the house and didn’t see him again until about 7 p.m.

Smoke was spotted coming from the ravine where the bodies were found about 20 to 30 minutes after the trio was seen leaving the home. It took detectives eight minutes to drive from the home to the spot where the bodies were found. Detectives were able to track down Fragos-Ramirez for an interview after Cruiz-Calvillo’s brother, Arturo Calvillo, remembered meeting a man who matched the description of Fragos-Ramirez while at a house on church business. Calvillo took Detective Jason Nunez to the house, and Nunez contacted a woman there.

The woman told Nunez she had a brother who was at the house when Calvillo came over. She called Fragos-Ramirez and handed the phone to Nunez, who then set up an interview.

Fragos-Ramirez told Nunez he last had contact with Cruiz-Calvillo about 2:30 p.m. the day she was killed and had not heard from or seen her since. Nunez arrested Fragos-Ramirez on an outstanding warrant and booked him into jail.

After Nunez spoke to the neighbors, he interviewed Fragos-Ramirez again. Fragos-Ramirez claimed Cruiz-Calvillo came to his house about 5:10 p.m. to bring him cigarettes.

“He said he last saw (Cruiz-Calvillo) and her son leaving his property in her vehicle,” Nunez wrote in a probable cause affidavit. “He said her son was in the back seat in a child seat.”

Nunez searched Fragos-Ramirez’s home and found three clean boxes of .9-mm ammunition stashed in a tire in a dusty shed on the property, court documents said. Fragos-Ramirez admitted to recently having a .9-mm handgun, but claimed he sold it to Cruiz-Calvillo three days before the murders for $300 “because he needed the money for a party he was throwing that day.”

Fragos-Ramirez claimed his brother, Isabel Fragoza, had seen him sell the gun to Cruiz-Calvillo.

Fragoza denied the claim and told Nunez he had seen his brother with a handgun recently, but didn’t know what happened to the gun.

Authorities booked Fragos-Ramirez for two counts of first-degree murder after determining he was seen with the victims shortly before they were killed and that he was unaccounted for when they died.
Prosecutors said in court Monday that Fragos-Ramirez could possibly be charged with aggravated first-degree murder, which carries an automatic sentence of life in prison if convicted.

Court grants Ohakim N270m bail for N270m fraud

Ohakim-495x442px
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, bail in the sum of N270m.
Ohakim, who is being prosecuted for N270m fraud allegedly perpetrated in 2008, is to produce a surety resident in Abuja to guarantee the bail.
Justice Adeniyi Ademola, in his ruling on the bail application, filed by Ohakim, also ordered the prosecuting agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, ‎to submit the passport and other travel documents seized from the former governor to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.
The judge was silent on where the accused person should remain pending when he would meet the bail conditions.
But Justice Ademola had, on Wednesday, ordered the accused person to remain in EFCC custody pending the hearing of his bail application on Thursday.
At the hearing of the bail application on Thursday, the defence counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), urged the court to grant his client’s prayer.
He said his client, whose passport had been seized by the EFCC, had remained faithful to the bail conditions granted him by the anti-graft agency.
But the prosecutor, Mr. Festus Keyamo, opposed the bail.
He argued that rather than granting bail to the accused person‎, the court should grant an accelerated hearing.

But the judge in his ruling held that the accused person had placed sufficient materials before the court to warrant granting him bail.
The EFCC had on Wednesday arraigned Ohakim on three counts of fraud, including making cash payment of $2.29m (N270m) for a property in Asokoro, Abuja.
The prosecution also accused the former governor of collaborating with Tweenex Consociates H.D. Ltd. ‎to conceal the ownership of the property by drafting an agreement portraying him as a tenant in the property.
Ohakim, who was governor of Imo State between May 2007 and May 2001, was also accused of failing to declare the property as part of his assets while under EFCC arrest in November 2008.
The offences were allegedly committed in 2008 in violation of section 15(1)(d) and section 14(1)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, respectively.
Meanwhile, Justice Evoh Chukwu of the same Federal High Court in Abuja, had on Wednesday fixed hearing of the bail application filed by former Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, his son Abdul-Aziz and others till Friday.
The EFCC had also on Wednesday arraigned Nyako, who was removed as Adamawa State Governor by the state House of Assembly on July 15, 2014, along with his son, Abdul-Aziz, and others comprising, Zulkifikk Abba, Abubakar Aliyu as well as five firms through which he allegedly siphoned about N29bn belonging to the state.
‎The other firms arraigned along with Nyako and his son were Blue Opal Limited, Sebore Farms and Extension Limited, Pagoda Fortunes Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Crust Energy Limited.

Man forces wife to wear humiliating sign around the streets (see photos)

Wang Ni, 33, was reportedly beaten by her husband and forced to walk through the steets nearly naked whilst he was under the influence of alcohol.
The husband, named as Zhang, 37, accused the woman of having an extra-marital affair.
Several photographs have emerged showing Wang Ni, 33, walking through the streets in Yushan county, situated in southeast China's Jiangxi province.
Driving in a large black 4x4 vehicle, the husband can be seen moving slowly behind the woman, watching her being humiliated.

The low quality photos show the unmarked car driving close beside the woman, caring little for the possible implications of his actions.
Since the shocking incident happened, an apology notice appeared in a local newspaper, written by the husband, Zhang.
The handwritten notice in a local newspaper was reportedly a apology note written by the woman's husband
Driving slowly alongside the poor woman, the man's actions was reportedly revenge for an alleged affair
According to local media reports, the couple have two daughters and had been married for 10 years.
Zhang worked long hours, running a property development company and is believed to have little time to see his wife, who lived in another city with their children.
Friends of the couple allegedly told local reporters that the husband was blamed his wife for their lack of a son in the family.
The apology letter, written in Chinese, seems to be an attempt to repair the damage between the married couple. It remains unclear what has happened to the man and woman.
