Court grants Ohakim N270m bail for N270m fraud

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday granted a former Governor of Imo State, Ikedi Ohakim, bail in the sum of N270m.

Ohakim, who is being prosecuted for N270m fraud allegedly perpetrated in 2008, is to produce a surety resident in Abuja to guarantee the bail.
Justice Adeniyi Ademola, in his ruling on the bail application, filed by Ohakim, also ordered the prosecuting agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, ‎to submit the passport and other travel documents seized from the former governor to the Deputy Chief Registrar of the court.

The judge was silent on where the accused person should remain pending when he would meet the bail conditions.

But Justice Ademola had, on Wednesday, ordered the accused person to remain in EFCC custody pending the hearing of his bail application on Thursday.

At the hearing of the bail application on Thursday, the defence counsel, Chief Chris Uche (SAN), urged the court to grant his client’s prayer.

He said his client, whose passport had been seized by the EFCC, had remained faithful to the bail conditions granted him by the anti-graft agency.

But the prosecutor, Mr. Festus Keyamo, opposed the bail.

He argued that rather than granting bail to the accused person‎, the court should grant an accelerated hearing.

But the judge in his ruling held that the accused person had placed sufficient materials before the court to warrant granting him bail.

The EFCC had on Wednesday arraigned Ohakim on three counts of fraud, including making cash payment of $2.29m (N270m) for a property in Asokoro, Abuja.

The prosecution also accused the former governor of collaborating with Tweenex Consociates H.D. Ltd. ‎to conceal the ownership of the property by drafting an agreement portraying him as a tenant in the property.

Ohakim, who was governor of Imo State between May 2007 and May 2001, was also accused of failing to declare the property as part of his assets while under EFCC arrest in November 2008.

The offences were allegedly committed in 2008 in violation of section 15(1)(d) and section 14(1)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004, respectively.

Meanwhile, Justice Evoh Chukwu of the same Federal High Court in Abuja, had on Wednesday fixed hearing of the bail application filed by former Adamawa State governor, Murtala Nyako, his son Abdul-Aziz and others till Friday.

The EFCC had also on Wednesday arraigned Nyako, who was removed as Adamawa State Governor by the state House of Assembly on July 15, 2014, along with his son, Abdul-Aziz, and others comprising, Zulkifikk Abba, Abubakar Aliyu as well as five firms through which he allegedly siphoned about N29bn belonging to the state.

‎The other firms arraigned along with Nyako and his son were Blue Opal Limited, Sebore Farms and Extension Limited, Pagoda Fortunes Limited, Tower Assets Management Limited and Crust Energy Limited.

NAFDAC confiscates N3m fake drugs, others in Jigawa

The Jigawa office of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control says it has confiscated fake food items and drugs worth N3.28 million.

The Director of the Agency in the state, Mr. Olakunle Olaniran, told the News Agency of Nigeria on Thursday in Dutse
that the items were confiscated in Dutse and other major towns in the state in the last three years.

He explained that the food items and drugs confiscated were fake and adulterated.

The director said the items included sugar, spaghetti and vegetable oil.

He said the others were oxytocin injections, gentamacin injections, sudrex tablets and augmentin syrup.

Olaniran said the agency was waiting for directive from its national office approving the destruction of the seized items.

Man forces wife to wear humiliating sign around the streets (see photos)

Wang Ni, 33, was reportedly beaten by her husband and forced to walk through the steets nearly naked whilst he was under the influence of alcohol.
The husband, named as Zhang, 37, accused the woman of having an extra-marital affair.
Several photographs have emerged showing Wang Ni, 33, walking through the streets in Yushan county, situated in southeast China's Jiangxi province.
Driving in a large black 4x4 vehicle, the husband can be seen moving slowly behind the woman, watching her being humiliated.
 
The low quality photos show the unmarked car driving close beside the woman, caring little for the possible implications of his actions.
Since the shocking incident happened, an apology notice appeared in a local newspaper, written by the husband, Zhang.

According to local media reports, the couple have two daughters and had been married for 10 years.
Zhang worked long hours, running a property development company and is believed to have little time to see his wife, who lived in another city with their children.
Friends of the couple allegedly told local reporters that the husband was blamed his wife for their lack of a son in the family.
The apology letter, written in Chinese, seems to be an attempt to repair the damage between the married couple. It remains unclear what has happened to the man and woman.

Man Was Arrested With Fake $2.1million At Lagos Airport (Photos)

45-year old Lawrence Agbe was arrested by security officials at the Muritala Mohammed International Airport Ikeja Lagos while trying to transport fake dollar bills totaling $2.1 million from Lagos to Abuja.
While speaking on the arrest, the Commissioner of Police for the command, Mr. Fredrick Lakanu, said during interrogation Lawrence said the fake dollar bills were owned by one Steve.

“After further interrogation, the suspect mentioned one Steve residing in Abuja as the owner of the said €1.25m. But Steve is at large.”CP Lakanu said

Edo man dies during ‘deliverance’ prayer, pastor arrested

 

There was pandemonium on Okwanga Street around Uselu Quarters in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State on Tuesday after a 45-year-old man, identified as Osayande Ekhator, died ‎during a deliverance session in a Pentecostal church in the area.

It was gathered that the Ekhator had been taken to the church, Hope Ministry, also known as Holy Ghost Deliverance Centre, by his relatives on Monday, due to an undisclosed ailment.

It was, however, learnt that some residents heard a loud cry from the church and rushed there only to discover the lifeless body of the deceased in the church.

Some angry youths were also said to have ‎stormed the church and vandalised some valuable property.

One of the residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, alleged that the deceased might hit his head against a hard object, as ‎there were blood stains on his head.

“I think he must have hit his head somewhere. I saw blood on his head‎ when his body was placed in a vehicle,” the resident said.

The father of the deceased, Pa Ekhator, said he had suspected that the deliverance session had gone wrong when his son was thrown to the ground, with his hands and legs tied.

He said, “They forced‎ him and tied him as usual and threw him down. From there, they carried a bucket full of water and poured it on his body.

“The mother asked why. They said that is what they usually do‎; that after struggling, they wanted him to have rest and cool down. After about five minutes, she came crying that Osayande is dead.”

But the sister of the deceased alleged that he was “beaten to death” by his deliverers, who had also planned to deposit his remains in a mortuary.

The Resident Pastor of the church, Mrs. Isoken  Ekundaye, denied the allegations.

“We don’t kill here. We don’t beat here. If they bring insane people, we heal,” Ekundaye said‎.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Stephen Onwochei, said the said pastor had been arrested while the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.

Jonathan govt’s response to Chibok girls case unimpressive -Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said the conflicting reports that emerged from the government and the security chiefs in the days shortly after the over 200 schoolgirls were kidnapped in Chibok, Borno State, portrayed the government of former President Goodluck Jonathan in bad light locally and internationally.
Buhari spoke while granting audience to members of the BringBackOurGirls group.
The President said the government’s response to the incident was far from being impressive and unfortunate.
“We cannot rationalise the government’s incompetence in handling this issue,” he said.
Buhari reiterated the commitment of his government to mobilise and deal with the scourge of terrorism across the country.
He also insisted that members of the Boko Haram sect could not claim to be propagating Islam, saying they should think of changing their name to something else.

EFCC fails to arraign ex-gov Lamido, sons in Kano

 

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Wednesday failed to arraign a former Governor of Jigawa State, Alhaji Sule Lamido, and two of his sons, Mustapha and Aminu, at a Federal High Court in Kano over alleged money laundering.

 

The EFCC was expected to arraign Lamido and his two sons in court on Wednesday but did not produce the accused in court despite having filed the charges against the suspects in Kano on Tuesday.

The prosecutor, Mr. Simeon Akpah, attributed the inability of the anti-graft agency to arraign the suspects to flight problem from Abuja.

The trio are to be arraigned in court on a 24 counts of alleged mismanagement of about N1.3bn and abuse of office.

Lamido was alleged to have awarded contracts, valued at N1.3bn, to some companies, believed to be owned by his children.

It was learnt that the suspects would also be arraigned for alleged money laundering offences.

Aminu was arrested at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in 2013 for under declaring the amount of foreign currency on him while on his way to Egypt

Synagogue: Coroner recommends contractors, Joshua church’s prosecution

The Lagos coroner, Magistrate O.A. Komolafe, has called for the investigation and possible prosecution of the two Structural Engineers who built the collapsed six-storey building belonging to the Synagogue Church Of All Nations which killed 116 persons on September 12, 2014.
While Komolafe recommended the Structural Engineers, Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun, for prosecution for criminal negligence, the coroner equally indicted SCOAN of building without “possessing necessary permits,” asking that same to be investigated and prosecuted.
